FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Robots.txt is a file placed at the root of your website that tells search engine crawlers (bots) which pages or sections they are allowed or not allowed to crawl and index.
robots.txt must be in the root directory of your website, accessible at https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt. It won't work in subdirectories.
Yes, but it's a polite request, not a technical block. Well-behaved bots like Googlebot follow it. Malicious bots may ignore it. Disallow: / blocks Googlebot from crawling your entire site.
Add: Disallow: /page-path/ in your robots.txt. However, for pages you don't want indexed but still crawled, use a noindex meta tag instead. robots.txt only controls crawling, not indexing.
Without robots.txt, search engines will crawl your entire site (all publicly accessible pages). This is fine for most sites. A 404 on robots.txt is treated the same as allowing all crawlers.
